The Trip

Seven nights in a campervan through the greatest fjord landscapes in the world. A Bergen loop — pick up the van on Sunday 16th, drive a wide arc through western Norway, return seven days later. Every day is different. Nothing retraced. Average driving time just 2h 20m per day. Every campsite has grass and open space for the little one to run.

The adventure starts. Taxi to the camper provider — allow 60 minutes for handover. Confirm child seat fitted. Grocery run at Kiwi or Rema 1000. Drive east on RV13 — the road immediately feels like Norway. Stop at Tvindefossen waterfall (right beside the road, 5 minutes). Then Stalheimskleiva — park at Stalheim Hotel and walk the famous hairpin path (closed to vehicles since 2023 but fully open as a pedestrian path). Two waterfalls cascade into the valley on either side. Multiple spontaneous pull-offs throughout RV13 — add 30–45 mins for these. Arrive Nærøyfjorden Camping in Bakka: motorhome spot at the fjord edge, 1,400m cliffs above, mirror-still water. Barrel sauna on the dock.

Take the Nærøyfjord boat trip: 2 hours through the narrowest fjord in Europe, at points only 250m wide. Waterfalls drop from the cliffs beside the boat. Book in advance. Stop at Undredal — Norway's smallest stave church, buy brunost goat cheese made right here (inspired Frozen's Arendelle). Then drive up to Stegastein — a glass platform 650m above the fjord. Go before 10:00 or after 16:00 to avoid tour buses. Tonight at Flåm Camping, walk to Ægir Bryggeri for dinner.

Scenery changes completely today. Drive the Aurlandsfjellet Snow Road (Rv243) — open June to October, confirmed open for August 2026. Climbs to 1,306m with snow patches in mid-August. Multiple pull-offs throughout. Then join Sognefjord — Norway's longest (204km) and deepest (1,308m) fjord. The road follows the water east the whole way. At Skjolden drive 20km up Rv55 Sognefjellet for arctic tundra views. Tonight at Vassbakken — valley setting, waterfall views, inn on site for dinner.

Today you arrive at the centrepiece of the trip: Geirangerfjord. Enter via the Eagle Road (Ørnesvingen) — look straight down 11 hairpin bends into the fjord with the Seven Sisters waterfall visible on the far wall. The most photographed view in Norway. Then Flydalsjuvet — the classic panoramic viewpoint. Arrive late afternoon for golden light. Two nights at Vinje Camping — fjord views, trampoline for her, walk to the village. No packing tomorrow. Optional: Briksdalsbreen glacier detour on the drive in (adds ~1 hour).

Your breathing day. No big drive, no new campsite. Slow morning — she runs on the campsite grass with the fjord in front of her. Late morning take the Geirangerfjord boat tour: 1.5 hours past the Seven Sisters waterfall (seven streams, 250m drop) and the Suitor on the far wall. From the water looking up at the fjord walls she will love every minute. Afternoon: drive up to Vesterås Farm and hike to Storseterfossen — a waterfall you walk behind. About 1 hour up, steep in places, carry her on the harder sections. Perfect picnic spot at the top. Early night — biggest driving day tomorrow.

Longest driving day, most dramatic. Leave Geiranger by 07:30. Gudbrandsjuvet gorge first — deep canyon, steel walkways above the water, café on site, easy with the buggy. Then Trollstigen — confirmed open for full 2026 season (opened 27 April 2026, record-early). Go before 09:00 — 2,500 vehicles per day in peak August. Eleven hairpins with the Stigfossen waterfall dropping 320m beside you. Glass walkways at the top directly above the road. One of the greatest road experiences in Europe. Note: vehicles over 13.1m prohibited — your ~6m camper is fine. Then Ålesund — Art Nouveau city rebuilt after 1904 fire. Lunch here, climb 418 steps to Aksla viewpoint for 360° panorama. She counts the steps. Tonight at Trollveggen Camping — Norway's best campsite (ADAC), Troll Wall above, Rauma River alongside.

Last day on the road. Entirely fresh scenery — nothing retraced. The Hardangerfjord return is softer and wider than the northern fjords, with orchards running to the water's edge. Three waterfall stops: Vøringsfossen (182m, suspended walkway above the gorge, free entry — do this first), Låtefossen (twin waterfall right beside the road, stone arch bridge — 10-minute stop), and Steinsdalsfossen — flat guardrailed path that leads directly behind the waterfall. Your daughter walks behind a waterfall under her own steam. She will talk about this for years. Drop the camper in Bergen early evening. Check in to the airport hotel. Book your 04:30 taxi tonight before sleeping.

Buy direct from the village producer in Undredal — famous specifically from this village. Sweet, caramelised, extraordinary on crispbread in the van. Buy a block and it lasts the week.

Norwegian classics in Geiranger village. Kid-friendly, fjord views, walk from Vinje Camping. Good for a relaxed dinner on one of the two Geiranger evenings.
